TEN A DAY MADE THE SIXTY DAY TRIP. LEWIS AND CLARK CAMPED HERE IN 1805
BEFORE PORTAGING THE GREATING FALL OF THE MISSOURI. IT TOOK 18 DAYS OF
WALKING CARRYING ALL THE EQUIPMENT. WE DROVE TO THE FALLS, ONE HUNDRED

FUNNING THROUGH THE GENERATORS AT THE SIDE BUT SOME WAS SPILLING OVER
THE FALLS. STILL A BEAUTIFUL STEEP WALLED CANYON.

THE CORPS OF DISCOVERY SPENT THE WINTER OF 1804-05 PEACEFULLY WITH THE

INDIANS HAD GONE BEFORE. WE TOURED THE RECONSTRUTED FORT, AN EXCELLENT
NEW MUSEUM, AND THE KNIFE RIVER INDIAN VILLAGE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE.

WE DROVE ON TO WILLISTON ON THE BORDER OF MONTANA. FOR YOU BASKETBALL
FANS, THIS IS THE HOME OF PHIL JACKSON ( X-COACH OF THE BULLS ). THE

FIRST THING THIS MORNING WE WENT TO THE SOUTH DAKATA STATE MUSEUM IN
THE CAPITOL COMPLEX. IT HAS ON DISPLAY A ORIGINAL NINETY THOMAS
JEFFERSON FRIENDSHIP COINS TAHT WERE GIVEN OUT AS GIFTS TO THE
INDIANS. IT WAS FOUND BY A EARLY FARMER NEAR THE RIVER INMOBRIDGE IN
1834, THIRTY YEARS AFTER THE EXPLORERS PASSED UP RIVER. IT WAS GIVEN
TO THE STATE MUSEUMBY HIS DESCENDENTS. I WAS IMPRESSED AND BOUGHT A
REPLICA. WE DROVE NORTH ALONG THE RIVER TO BISMARK STOPPING TO SEE THE
GRAVE SITE OF SITTING BULL AND MONUMENT HONORING SACAJAWEA WHO DIED
NEARBY A FEW YEARS AFTER THE EXPEDITION. SHE WAS SO VITAL TO THE
SUCCESS OF THE EXPEDITION. THE RIVER WATER IS VERY LOW. MANU SANDBARS
EXPOSED IT WULD BE HARD TO BRING ANY DRAFT DRAWING BOAT DODWN THE RIVER
UNDER THESE CONDITIONS.

10:30 AM- I TOLD YOU LAST WEEK THAT MY BLOGGER FRIEND IS ON VACATION. HIS WIFE AND
HE ARE DOING THE LEWIS AND CLARK TRAIL. I WILL PUTTING OUT SOME BLOGS ON
HIS TRIP WHEN HE E-MAILS THEM TO ME.

SATURDAY MAY 7 - THEY DROVE ACROSS IOWA FARM LAND YESTERDAY TO

SIOUX CITY ON THE MISSOURI RIVER. IT WAS HERE IN AUG-1804 AFTER 3 MONTHS
TRAVELING UP THE RIVER THAT SARGENT CHARLES FLOYD WAS BURIED. HE DIED OF
NATURAL CAUSES AND REMARKABLY WAS THE ONLY CASUALTY OF THE ENTIRE
EXPEDITION. HIS BURIAL SPOT IS ON A BLUFF OVERLOOKING THE RIVER IS
COMMENMORATED BYA ONE HUNDRED FOOT TALL OBELISK. THE TEMP IS IN THE 80'S
AND VERY WINDY. THE RIVER WATER LEVEL IS VERY LOW DUE TO SEVERAL YEARS
OF LOW PRECIPITATION. THE EXPEDITION WOULD HAVE HAD A MUCH EASIER TIME
GOING UPRIVER IN THESE CONDITION.

SUNDAY MAY 8 - THIS MORNING WE SPENT ABOUT AN HOUR IN THE LEWIS ANN
CLARK EXPEDITION MUS IN SIOUX CITY AND THEN DROVE NORTH ALONG THE RIVER
TO SOURUT MOUND HISTORIC PRAIRIE.CLARK AND ELEVEN MEN WALKED NINE MILES
TO THE SEVENTY FOOT HIGH MOUND TO SEE INDIAN LEGEND BELIEVED IT WAS
INHABITED BY LITTLE FEARSOME SPIRIT BEINGS. THERE WAS NONE AND NEITHER
DID WE. IT WAS A VERY PLEASANT PEACEFUL TWO MILES WALK FROM THE PARKING
LOT FOR US. WE DRIVE ON TO PIERRE WHERE THE EXPEDITION HAD PEACEFUL
CONFRONTATION WITH THE TETON SIOUX. BOB BIKES TEN MILES ON THE BIKE
PATH BY THE RIVER.

SOUND LIKE BOB AND JUDY ARE HAVING A GREAT TIME. THANKS BOB FOR THE INFO.
